Guidelines for Authors
(Revised January 2018)

Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (IJPP) welcomes original manuscripts based upon research in physiological, pharmacological and allied sciences from any part of the world.

Types of manuscripts

Original Article and Short-communication

An original article may be published either as a Full-length research paper or as a Short communication. The decision is to publish as full-length article or as a short-communication is taken by the editorial board on the recommendation of the reviewers..

Review Article

Although the Editorial Board generally solicits review articles, proposals for review articles are welcome. Such a proposal should include a synopsis of the review article, and a list of publications of the author(s) on the subject of the review article.

Letters to editor

Letters to the Editor should generally address the scientific contents of articles recently published in IJPP.

News and Announcement

These are generally commissioned by the Editorial board, however spontaneous comments and commentary regarding information relating to events in recent past and planned activity that relevant to the readers is welcome. The contributors should submit their proposal/commentary to the Editor. The matter is subjected to quick in-house review. The decision to print is prerogative of the Editorial Board and is constrained by the Charter of APPI.

Obituaries

The obituaries are generally commissioned by the editorial board. The suggestions from readers for people whom we should feature are welcome. These suggestion should be mailed to the Editor (exec.editor@ijpp.net.in). The decision to print is prerogative of the Editorial Board and is constrained by the Charter of APPI.

Method of Submission

All articles and letters are subjected to editorial processing which includes review of the articles by referees and the Editorial Board. The submission is made through online portal www.ijppcentral.com. It is recommended that the manuscript to be prepared according to the instructions before starting the online submission process.

Original Article

The text of original scientific papers should follow the standard IMRAD structure. Prepare a separate word document. The main manuscript should not contain Author details. All tables, figures, references should be included in the single word document at appropriate place in continuity as part of text. Supplementary data will be uploaded as separate word document. The font size 12, single spacing, A4 size with common font (eg Times New Roman, Arial, Courier New etc) should preferably be used.

Title

Title should be concise and reflect the theme of the manuscript.

Abstract


The abstract should not be more than 500 words. The abstract should state the purpose of the study or investigation, basic procedures, (study subjects or experimental animals, observational and analytic methods), main findings (give specific data and their statistical significance, if possible), and the principal conclusions. Emphasize new and important aspects of the study or observations. Use only standard abbreviations.

Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (IMRAD)


Introduction


Introduction should briefly state the context of the study and relevant background information. It should clearly state the rational of the study on the basis of recent reports and the research question/hypothesis. Restrict references to pertinent ones, and do not review the subject extensively.


Methods

This section should be in sufficient details for the reader to understand and interpret results as well as provide reader enough information to replicate the study. It should include description of the subjects (patients or experimental animals, including controls) clearly, material, apparatus (manufacturer’s name and address in parentheses), and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to repeat the experiments. If the procedures involve an assay, include data on its accuracy, e.g. specificity, sensitivity. References to established methods, including statistical methods may be included. New or substantially modified methods should be described in detail along with reasons for using them and their limitations. When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the committee on human experimentation of the institution in which the experiments were done or in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate whether the Institution’s or Indian National Science Academy’s or Indian Council of Medical Research's guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals were followed. Identify precisely all drugs and chemicals used, including generic name(s), dosage(s) and route(s) of administration. Do not use patients’ name, initials, or hospital numbers. Include number of observations and the statistical significance of the finding when appropriate. Detailed statistical analyses, mathematical derivations, and the like may sometimes be suitably presented in the form of one or more appendices.


Results


The results should be presented in logical sequence in the text, tables, and illustrations. Avoid repetition of information text, tables, or illustrations. Emphasize or summarize only important observations.


Discussion


Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study and conclusions that follow from them. Avoid detailed repetition of data presented in the results. Refer to reports/studies that are in agreement/disagreement with observations in the present study. If applicable implication of the finding may be included. Limitations of the study may also be included, if any.Conclusion of the study should relate to the research question mentioned in the introduction. Avoid unqualified statements and conclusions not completely supported by your data. Avoid claiming priority and alluding to work that has not been completed. State new hypotheses when warranted, but clearly label them as such.


Acknowledgements


Acknowledge only persons who have made substantive contributions to the study. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from persons acknowledged by name because readers may infer their endorsement of the data and conclusions.


Tables


Place the tables at appropriate locations. Do not paste tables are images. Number tables consecutively and supply a brief title for each and footnote for each. Give each column a short or abbreviated heading. Explain in footnotes all nonstandard abbreviations that are used in each table. Identify statistical measures of variation such as standard deviation and standard error of the mean. Cite each table in the text in consecutive order.


Illustrations


Illustrative materials should be used with economy. Images should be placed at appropriate locations in the manuscript. Figures should be professionally drawn and saved as images (jpg). Letters, numbers and symbols should be clear and even throughout, and of sufficiently large size so that when reduced for publication, each item will still be legible. Titles and detailed explanations should be given in legends, not on the illustrations themselves. If photographs of persons are used, either the subjects must not be identifiable or their pictures must be accompanied by written permission to use the photograph. When symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters are used for identifying parts of an illustration, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend. Explain internal scale and identify method of staining in photomicrographs.


Units of Measurement


Measurement of length, height, weight, and volume should be reported in metric units (metre, kilogram, litre) or their decimal multiples or fractions. Temperatures should be given in degrees Celsius. Blood pressures should be given in millimitres of mercury. Other measurements should be reported in the units in which they were made.

References


Number the references consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text (References should be restricted to 30 in number). Identify reference in text, and legends, by arabic numerals (in parentheses). References cited only in tables or in legends should be numbered in accordance with a sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or illustration.

Referencing style: Use the style of the examples below, which are based on the formats used by U.S. National Library of Medicine in Index Medicus. The title of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus. Try to avoid using abstracts as references. “Unpublished observations” and verbal personal communications may not be used as references, although references to written communications may be inserted. In manuscripts accepted but not yet published, designate the journal followed by “in press” (in parenthesis). Information from manuscripts submitted but not yet accepted
should be cited in the text as “unpublished observations” (in parentheses). The references must be verified by the author(s) against the original documents.

Format for Books and Monographs

Format for online sources


Author or Organization responsible for generation and posting of the content being cited. Title or header of the webpage. Accessed from www.full address of the webpage, accessed on (mm/dd/yyyy)
General: Only standard terms which have been generally accepted should be used. Proprietary or trade names should begin in capitals and the spellings carefully checked. The chemical and official name must precede the proprietary name of a drug.

Short-communication

The basic format of the short-communication is similar to the original article with constraints regarding the length of the article. The short-communication should be restricted to 1500 words and preferably 1 table and/or figure and not more than 10 references. The focus should be on study design, methods and results. The introduction and discussion should be succinct and to the point.


Letters to Editor

The Journal welcomes correspondence on the content published in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology. The correspondence must reach the editors office with 30 days of publication of the original article/short communication. The correspondence is generally not peer reviewed. The correspondence should not be more than 400 words with maximum of 5 references and 3 authors.


News and Announcements


The news should not be more than 400 words with maixmum of 5 references. The design/structure of the announcement is decided after consultation with the Editorial Board and Office bearers of APPI.
